PREOPERATIVE INFORMATION

I’ve seen the Dr. what happens next?
After the Information is received by the surgery scheduler your insurance is verified and authorization is obtained if necessary.

What do I need for a pre-op?
Each patient and surgery has their own standards that need to be followed. You may need to see you Primary Care Doctor or Internist for a Clearance prior to surgery. Some patients may need to see their Cardiologist as well.

How do I prepare?
For most patients you will need to discontinue Aspirin, Anti Inflammatory medicine and any Herbal Supplements 10 days prior to surgery.
You will need to be fasting for 12 hours prior to surgery. This includes no water or liquids. Depending on surgery type and time this may change.
You will need an adult to drive you home after surgery and stay with you for the first 24 hours after surgery. If you are having an out-patient surgery.

What about Medical Equipment?
If crutches or a walker are required for you after surgery they will be given to you by the facility. However if you have your own please bring them with you the day of surgery.
Some items like shoulder slings or post op knee braces may be given to you at the Doctors office ahead of time. Please bring these items with you the day of surgery.

How much pain will I be in?
Each patient has their own level of tolerance. The Doctor will give you a prescription for pain medication to be filled prior to surgery. Follow the directions that you are given at discharge.

How quick is recovery?
Depending on the type of surgery you have this will be different for each patient. Please plan on taking at least a few days to recover at home.
Your Doctor will advise you when it is safe for you to return to work or drive as well as when you can return to your normal routine.

How soon for follow visits?
Your Doctor will advise you at your pre-op visit when he wants to see you back for your post-op visit. The receptionist will make your appointment accordingly.
